Hawker Brownlow Education in partnership with Edith Cowan University is proud to launch the new home of Friendly Schools PLUS online! Friendly Schools PLUS is based on 11 major research projects conducted by the Child Health Research Centre at Edith Cowan University and led by Professor Donna Cross since 1999 involving more than 27,000 Australian school-age students from pre-primary to Year 10, their teachers and families. The Friendly Schools PLUS program is also linked directly to the General Capabilities outlined in the Australian Curriculum under Personal and Social Capability.
Unfriendly behaviour is an increasing problem amongst Australian children. A study released 19th June, 2013 by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (read Children's Experiences of Unfriendly Behaviour from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children Annual Statistical Report 2012); found that three in five children aged 10-11 years reported that they have experienced unfriendly behaviour at school in the past 12 months. Friendly Schools PLUS helps schools to examine how they are currently developing social and emotional skills with students as well as strategies for bullying prevention, and then helps them to identify gaps and strategically build their school's capacity to address these gaps using widely tested strategies. These resources are age specific, ranging from ages 4-14 years old.
